Love that Lasts

Recently, I saw a post asking whether people believe in "romantic love." The comments below the post were surprising and saddening in nature.  A great many people seemed to hope that such a thing as romantic love might exist, but they hadn't found it yet. Some were so jaded from past relationships that they doubted it was even possible.

All around me, I see relationships in "crash and burn" mode. Perhaps they survived for a few years, maybe even a decade or two together, but ultimately, more and more marriages are taking a fatal nosedive.

What causes this tragic epidemic of casualties, especially among Christian couples - those who claim to know the source of true love? I suspect there are many reasons that could be cited, and many complicated variations of those reasons. Sometimes there are very real problems that eat away at a marriage until it cannot survive. Whatever the reasons, so much heartache and destruction trails in the wake of a ruined marriage. Broken hearts, broken children, broken lives, and so much baggage - can it be avoided?

I believe it can. I have only been married for 17 years at this point, and I definitely do not claim to be an expert on marriage. However, in that time, I have learned some very important lessons about love that lasts.

1. Before you say, "I do," be absolutely certain that God is leading you together.
I cannot begin to tell of the marriages that have struggled from the outset because two people rushed into marriage blinded by passion that overruled their common sense and everyone else's objections. Marriage is a lifetime decision, not something to be lightly entered into, then discarded when it becomes inconvenient or uninteresting.  If you are married already, then God's will is for you to stay in that marriage unless you are in real, physical danger. I won't say anything more about that now,  but perhaps I will address it at a later date.

2.  Accept your spouse for who they are.  Too many people enter a relationship with the ulterior motive of "fixing" the other person's real or imagined faults. If you love them, you will not try to manipulate them into conforming into someone they are not. You wouldn't appreciate that, so why do you think they would? Love is not two perfect people falling in love - it is two imperfect people trying their hardest to love one another.

3.  Cultivate a sense of humor.
Let's face it - marriage can be tough. Situations arise on a regular basis that can stress us out and cause us to snap at one another. Instead, take a step back, take a deep breath, and try to find the humor in the situation. Perhaps it will, at the time, seem a little like "gallows humor," but learning to laugh instead of cry, scream, or blame can make a huge difference. This works best if you are laughing together, not at the other person. It takes some work at first to see things in a humorous light, but after a while, it becomes second nature.

4.  Be faithful.
I shouldn't have to say this, but there it is. So many people destroy their marriage by neglecting this basic rule.  Perhaps they never intend to, but a word here, a look there, an inappropriate text or two, and soon the seeds of an affair, either emotional or physical, are sown.  Guard your marriage closely.  The pasture is not greener on the other side of the fence.

5.  Love deeply and unreservedly.
If God has blessed you with a marriage partner, He has given you a special ministry. Only you can complete that other person. Your job is to be the most loving, supportive spouse that you can be. Don't let little things drive a wedge between you, and never go to bed angry. You are not guaranteed tomorrow, and lavishing your love on your spouse will ensure that you have no regrets.

6.  Pray for one another.
It is the greatest thing you can do for your spouse. You, better than any other person, know their strengths, weaknesses, struggles, trials, blessings, and fears. It is also impossible to stay angry with someone while intervening for them before the throne of grace.

7Walk in the Spirit.
So much pain and heartache could be avoided if we just followed this rule for life. Things said and done in the heat of a moment can chip away at your love and the foundation of your marriage. Offenses are taken up and held closely, grievances (many of which begin as simple misunderstandings) are taken out, petted, and fed with bitterness until they reach epic proportions.  All of these destructive behaviors are an evidence of failure to walk in the Spirit.

Perhaps this is a bit simplistic,  and not at all exhaustive in nature, but following these basic rules will give you a love that lasts for years.

My Valentine

On Valentine’s Day, our thoughts turn to love, romance, and chocolate… No exceptions here!  I am celebrating my 15th Valentine’s Day with my one and only Valentine!  Our first Valentine activity was during my senior year of college (some of you may remember that) at Ambassador Baptist College.  We were thrilled to (finally) attend this activity together.  Long story, if you don’t already know.  Here is a picture of the two of us that momentous day!

Now, fifteen years later, we again celebrate this special day for sweethearts.  We have grown and changed over the years, but inside we still carry the same love for one another.  Now, however, that love  is deeper and stronger, having been through many tests and challenges.  I am thankful for what God has given us.

13:Our Lucky Number

No, I don’t really believe in luck.  I believe in God’s perfect will.  I believe in His blessings.  I believe that He works all things for our good when we love Him and keep His commandments.  Nothing could be better than that.

IMAG0290  Today is our day – well, one of them.  Thirteen years ago this very day, Paul asked me to become his wife.  It was a cold, dark, dreary evening in Charlotte, NC, in one of the most unromantic settings that either of us could imagine.  However, that doesn’t really matter to me.  Our relationship was never about flowers and sentimental poems (although I have received those from time to time).  It was about us.  Togetherness.  Finding the will of God for our lives and helping one another to fulfill that plan.  Being there for one another through thick and thin, good times and bad, rich and poor.  That commitment officially began thirteen (has is really been that long?!) years ago.

They have been good years, filled with love, laughter, and adventure.  That love has been tested through difficult times as well, but we wouldn’t change a thing.  I am so glad that thirteen years ago our lives were set on this path.  I am so thankful that thirteen is now our “lucky” number!

Happy Anniversary!

This weekend, my husband and I will celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary—separately!  No, we aren’t fighting, and we don’t need marriage counseling (at least I don’t).  It just happened to work out that way this year.  So while I am sweating it out with the four children in Mississippi, Paul will be sweating it out in El Paso! :)

So many things have happened in these twelve years, and most of them good.  I will recount some of these for you here.

  • 12 years of wedded bliss (the honeymoon doesn’t have to end)!
  • 4 sweet children that live with us
  • 1 precious baby who lives with Jesus
  • 2 RVs
  • 4 states of residence—WV, NC, IN, MS
  • 1 mission house
  • 1 rented mobile home
  • 1 cute little house (which, by the way, we are hoping to finish the paperwork and complete the closing next week, HOORAY! That means we can purchase a house in the area where we now live!)
  • 1 Dodge Ram 3500
  • 2 years of part-time evangelism (while teaching at ABC)
  • 10 years of full-time evangelism
  • 300,000+ miles traveled in meetings
  • 16,000+ pictures
  • Hundreds of sermons—I don’t think I can even figure out how many! :)
  • Hundreds of friends all over the world
  • 2 mission trips
  • Dozens of adventures
  • Countless everyday blessings
  • 1 thoughtful and funny husband
  • 1 extremely happy wife

Like I said, just a sample of the good things…  I thank the Lord for the husband he has given me, and for the wonderful life we have had together so far.  I am looking forward to the next 68 years!  :)

Love My Babies

Well, they technically aren’t babies any more, but I will always think of them that way.  (Don’t tell them – they might be offended!)  I just wanted to say that in spite of the fact that they drive me crazy sometimes, I love them all so much.  Look at this picture and tell me how anyone could keep from loving these four adorable, precious children!  Just for the record—here are four of my greatest blessings!

Happy Birthday!

It is birthday time in our house again.  This time, it is one of those “big” birthdays.  My dearly beloved husband, Paul, is turning thirty-five today!  I just want to take a few minutes to publicly say how much I appreciate him!

I am thankful for a husband who is faithful.  This year will mark our tenth year in evangelism.  The journey hasn’t always been easy, but he has stayed faithful to God, to his calling, and to our family.

I am thankful for a husband who has a strong work ethic. In those “lean times,” as we call them, when we have no income from evangelistic meetings, he has done his best to provide for us in whatever way he can – hunting, odd jobs, and the like.

I am thankful for a husband who has a sense of humor.  When things get tough, there is nothing more discouraging than a pessimist looking at everything through bleak glasses.  Paul is not that way – laughter fills our home.  That is not to say that we go around the house with a grin on our faces all the time, but the overall tone of our lives is that of cheerfulness.

I am thankful for a husband with common sense.  You may laugh, but I am serious!  I have seen too many people make foolish decisions that could have been avoided with some previous thought.

I am thankful for a husband with a teachable spirit.  No matter how much he knows, he is willing to sit and listen to others to glean knowledge and experience from them.

I am thankful for a thoughtful husband.  His love for me is obvious in the little, everyday things he does – washing the dishes, changing dirty diapers, throwing in a load of laundry, picking up after himself, putting hooks on my laundry doors (love those), and a million other little things.

This list is not exhaustive, lest you realize what a paragon of virtues my husband is and become extremely jealous or depressed.  :)  What I want to say most of all is this: “I love you, Babe!  Happy Birthday!”

Love Notes

"How do I love thee?  Let me count the ways..."
Ahhhh!  February is here, and our thoughts tend to be a little more "romantic" as we anticipate the upcoming Valentine's Day.  Admit it - you are already dreaming of chocolate and roses, kisses and romance.  I am - especially the chocolate part!  I had the most wonderful thing happen to me last week.  My oh-so-wonderful husband surprised me with a series of love notes tucked away in places he knew I would find them.  There was one in my Bible, where my daily reading marker was placed, one in my makeup bag, one in the kitchen, and so forth.  Each note contained a specific reason for his love for me.  I was so touched!  This is not the first time he has done something like that, but it doesn't happen every week, either!  I am thankful for a husband who daily expresses his love for me in words and actions.  Today, start thinking of reasons you love your spouse.  See how many you can come up with before Valentine's Day, and surprise them by writing the reasons down.  They don't have to be great big things.  For instance, I am thankful that my husband puts his own clothes in the hamper when he takes them off!  Something little, yes, but after ten years of marriage, that has saved me a lot of extra work!  Too many times we focus on what they don't do, or what we wish they would do.  This year, write your own unique set of love notes, and tell your spouse some of the reasons you love them.  It will give you an increased appreciation for them.  It will also encourage them to keep doing the "little things" that become everyday romance.
